History of the Chair
The Chair was founded on July 1, 2003 on the basis of Comparative Law Chair that has been functioning at the institute since 1992 (heads of the Chair were professors P. F. Martynenko, V. K. Zabigajlo).
The foundation of the Chair is mainly connected with the Ukraine’s strategic course of integration into the European Union as well as with objective necessity of preparation of proper specialists in this sphere of state’s foreign policy. The Institute won the competition in 1997 and became the coordinator of the program TEMPUS-TACIS project “The Training of Personnel in the Sphere of European Researches”. During the Project the Center of European Schools was formed on the basis of our Institute with the International Renaissance Foundation assistance. In this Center such Master courses as “European Policy”, “European Law”, “European Economy and Integration” and European Researches Summer School were opened.
At the International Law Department the students’ specialization in European Law has been carried out approximately for 3 years. Educational programs in specialized subjects have been worked out, many text books and manuals have been published. In 1999 within the framework of the agreement between Taras Shevchenko Kyiv National University and University of Paris – 2 (Panteon-Assa) the Educational Program on French and European Law for the 4th and 5th – year students was implemented. As a result of this Program 17 graduates of the Institute of International Relations received their Master’s degrees of the University of Paris – 2 and Taras Shevchenko Kyiv National University. At the same time our Institute together with Ivan Franko Lviv National University and some foreign universities took part in the realization of the TEMPUS project “European Law at the Ukrainian Universities”.
Teaching the subjects and participating in these international educational programs were ensured by the teaching staff of two Chairs: The International Law Chair (the head of the Chair was Docent V. Muravjov) and The Comparative Law Chair (the head of the Chair was Professor V. Zabigajlo). That caused some inconveniences in coordination of educationally-methodical and educationally-organizational work.
In this connection and with regard to the objective necessity to continue the educational and professional training of the “European Law” specialists The Comparative Law Chair was reorganized and renamed into The Comparative and European Law Chair.
